The ear defenders use IWNR which is intelligent wind noise reduction to reduce background noise. The amplification can be fully adjusted independently on each muff, these muffs allow you to hear people speak normally and also low noise levels like birds taking flight of a clay trap going off , they can even be set to amplify such sounds, yet when you or a neighbour fire your gun the muffs automatically shut dow to block the noise levels that damage you hearing.
